During the month of September, there is a gradual
tendency toward the end of the lean period in many West African countries, and
food availability is already improving in some countries with the arrival of
new crops. It should be added that for crops that have not yet matured,
vegetative development is continuing and prospects for good harvests are
expected. By country and by cereal crop the situation is as follows:
For rice: In almost all of the rice markets followed during the
month of September, the trend was towards price stability with the exception of
Ghana which saw a very slight increase. Thus, it should be noted that, compared
to last month, 7 of the 8 countries followed had stable prices.
For maize: 4 of the 8 countries have experienced price stability
in their markets. These include Togo, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. 2
countries experienced a slight decline in prices in their markets. These are
Niger and Benin. The trend has been a slight increase in Senegal and Mali.
For millet: During the month of September, five countries (Togo,
Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Burkina, Senegal) were stable in their markets
while 3 countries (Benin, Mali, Senegal) recorded higher prices in their
markets.
For sorghum: During the month of September, 3 of the 8 countries
recorded relative price stability in their markets (Togo, Ghana, and Côte
d'Ivoire). The trend is on the other hand a slight increase in Senegal, Mali,
Niger and Benin. Only Burkina Faso recorded a slight decline in prices in its
markets.
