During the month of December 2019, new crops of rice, maize, millet, sorghum continued to appear on the cereal markets of the West African countries monitored. As a result there has been a good increase in supply.
However, faced with the constantly increasing demand also during the same period linked to the end-of-year holidays, prices were generally stable even if the seasonal decreases started in certain localities. By sector and by country, the trend is as follows:
For rice: Price stability has been noted in Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Niger. Only Senegal and Nigeria observed price reductions in their markets.
For maize: The overall trend has been for price stability in the majority of the markets monitored (Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. Only Senegal and Nigeria have experienced declines in prices in their markets.
For millet: Stable prices have been noted in Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Niger. Field and wholesale prices for millet increased slightly in Senegal and Burkina Faso when a drop was expected. This is linked to the delay noted in the hype of the new production and therefore to a weakness in supply.
For Sorghum: Apart from Niger and Burkina –Faso which recorded a slight fall in prices on their markets, the trend was rather towards stability on the markets of Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and from Benin.
